Delhi airport starts facial recognition system

Delhi International Airport (DIAL) is coming out with a three-month test to establish a Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel Experience (BEST) from 6 September 2019.

The testing will be based on facial recognition technology. DIAL will initiate the trial with Vistara at Terminal 3 (T3) of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. With this plan, Delhi, the busiest airport in the nation, will join the expanding number of airports including Hyderabad where such a service has been attempted. With the start of the trial at T3, commuters’ entrance will be automatically managed based on the facial recognition system at all spot check including airport entry, entry for safety checks, and boarding the aircraft.

The registration process for commuters with valid flight tickets and government ID proofs will begin at the registration booth after which their facial elements will be taken by a camera. At the similar time, the papers provided by the commuters will be confirmed by CISF personnel at the booth. The applicant’s ID proof will be physically checked and verified on the system.

After this, the commuters can reach out to the dedicated departure e-gate, which too is equipped with facial recognition cameras. The e-gates will open automatically after the facial identification procedure is complete.
